1. Waiting until the last week
What goes wrong: Menus, guest counts and shopping lists decided at the last minute turn into stress.
The fix: Write the menu, the guest count and who is bringing what about three weeks ahead. Check fridge, freezer and oven space on paper before you buy anything.
2. Shopping for everything at once
What goes wrong: One giant shop means crowded stores and a fridge that cannot hold it all.
The fix: Buy pantry items, drinks and frozen foods early. Save fresh vegetables, herbs and dairy for a few days before.
3. Forgetting the thaw time
What goes wrong: A frozen turkey needs real time to thaw, and the countdown starts earlier than most people expect.
The fix: Check the package for thawing guidance and start early, in the fridge. Do not leave it out on the counter.
4. Cooking everything on the day
What goes wrong: The oven and the stove become a traffic jam, and everything is ready at the wrong time.
The fix: Make cranberry sauce, pies, dips and gravy bases ahead. Chop vegetables the day before and store them in containers.
5. Planning only the oven
What goes wrong: Too many dishes that all need the oven at once.
The fix: Mix it up: choose sides that work on the stovetop, in a slow cooker or at room temperature, and write an oven schedule.
6. No plan for the table
What goes wrong: Missing serving dishes and no space to set things down delay the meal.
The fix: Match each dish to a serving bowl and spoon the day before. Set the table and clear counter space the night before.
7. No leftovers plan
What goes wrong: Leftovers left out too long or packed in a rush get wasted.
The fix: Have containers ready before dinner. Pack leftovers soon after the meal and plan how you will reheat them.
